For a long time, a sure sign that someone didn’t know what a good beer is would be the fact that they were drinking it from a can. In fact, for many of us, watching someone drink beer from a can gave us the uneasy feeling that at any moment, they were going to smash it on their forehead and then turn around and do a “keg stand”. That has certainly changed; some of the finest beers around are now available in a can, and that’s convenient, now that summer is here. Whether on the patio, by the pool, or golfing, beer in a can is a fantastic convenience. It’s easier and safer to stash in a backpack or duffle, it won’t tip over as easily poolside, and if it does it won’t shatter, and when you’re done with your fun, the can will easily crunch down for easier toting as a returnable or recyclable. We’ve selected some nice beers to help you explore your independence this holiday weekend. Check them out below: |
Avery Brewing Company
All Six Pack Cans Were $14.99 Now $9.99 Avery has been producing eccentric ales and lagers that defy styles or categories since 1993. Thoroughly American at heart: blending Old World tradition and expertise with ingenuity, creativity and boldness. |

India Pale Ale |
In the 1700s one crafty brewer discovered that a healthy dose of hops and an increased alcohol content preserved his ales during the long voyage to India (as depicted in our label) to quench the thirst of British troops. Today, we tip our hat to that historic innovation by brewing Colorado’s hoppiest pale ale. Avery IPA demands to be poured into your favorite glass to truly appreciate the citrusy, floral bouquet and the rich, malty finish. Food pairing: Seafood dishes such as Ahi tuna or seared scallops are a great match, as are creamy pasta dishes like fettucini alfredo or pasta carbonara. The acidity and hop bitterness of Avery IPA will cut through creamy flavors and textures, providing balance to the pairing. Hop Variety: Columbus, Chinook, Cascade and Centennial Malt Variety: Two-row barley, Munich 10L, caramel 120L OG: 1.058 ABV: 6.5% IBUs: 69 Color: Golden
White Rascal |
A truly authentic Belgian style wheat or “white” ale, this Rascal is unfiltered (yup, that’s yeast on the bottom) and cleverly spiced with coriander and Curacao orange peel producing a refreshingly fruity thirst quencher. Food Pairing: Spicy Thai or Mexican dishes typially provide a level of heat and spiciness required to balance the semi-sweet, citrus flavors found in White Rascal. Our favorites are pad thai, green curry, blackened codfish and ceviche. Hop Variety: Czech Saaz. Malt Variety: Two-row barley, Belgian wheat. OG: 1.050 ABV: 5.6% IBUs: 10 Color: White
Ellie’s Brown Ale |
This beautiful, deep russet brew has the sweet and somewhat nutty character of Adam Avery’s late (1992-2002) Chocolate Lab, for which it is named. Crystal and chocolate malts give this beer a brown sugar maltiness with hints of vanilla and nuts, while subtle hopping gives it an overall drinkability that’s second to none, just like Ellie! Food Pairing: Roasted meats prepared with spicy and/or smoky flavors are natural pairings for Ellie’s Brown Ale. Try ancho chili pork or beef tacos with chipotle mole. Hop Variety: Bullion, Cascade, Fuggles. Malt Variety: Two-row barley, chocolate, Munich. 10L, caramel 120L OG: 1.056 ABV: 5.5% IBUs: 17 Color: Deep Russet
Joe’s Pilsner |
A contemporary rendition of a classic style, Joe’s is hopped with purpose: beautifully bitter and dry with an abundance of floral, Noble German hops. Uber sessionable. Utterly American. This is Premiuim American Pilsner. Food Pairing: The hersbrucker hops in Joe’s Pilsner are a cleansing counterpoint to mild, creamy cheeses like havarti or herb covered chevre. Hop Variety: Magnum, Hersbrucker. Malt Variety: Two-row barley OG: 1.048 ABV: 4.7% IBUs: 42 Color: Light Golden

Pick Axe Blonde Ale |
The lightest in our family of ales, a true single malt. Refreshing to taste, gorgeous to look at and a great introduction to the extraordinary world of craft-brewed Michigan beers. This light golden ale comes with a distinctive malt flavor and just a kiss of hops.
Red Jacket Amber Ale |
Medium bodied and lightly hopped, this classic Oktoberfest-style ale is brewed in tribute to the Red Jacket Mine of what is now Calumet and to the glory days of the copper industry in the Keweenaw Peninsula.
Lift Bridge Brown Ale |
Reportedly the widest and heaviest double-decked lift bridge in the world, the Portage Lake Lift Bridge connects the cities of Houghton and Hancock here in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. So get a lift from this American Brown Ale; a rich, dark brown color, complex malt flavor with hints of chocolate and caramel and a mild hop finish.
Widow Maker Black Ale |
Don’t let it’s looks deceive you. Clean and smooth, easy on the hops and easy on the palate; this light bodied ale has a surprising depth of malt flavors with pleasant hints of a smoky molasses.
Olde Ore Dock Scottish Ale |
A traditional Scottish ale, this darker beer focuses on malt color and flavor with hops being almost imperceptible. This ale, aged with American Red Oak, finishes crisp and a wee bit sweet.

This unfiltered amber ale is packed full of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. IPA is the most bitter beer style and it is enjoyed by people we refer to as “hopheads.” We dry hop this beer with a combination of English and American hop varieties for a wonderfully aromatic finish. 6.6% ABV |

Malty sweetness with cherry candy notes. Hop bitterness and flavor are mild and really only show up in the finish where they try in vain to balance the malt sweetness. On the palate it has a slightly thin feel for the sweetness and nice average carbonation. |

MillKing it BRIK Irish Red |
Whereas hops are the star in AXL, the complex harmony of malt dominates this easy drinking Red Ale. Five different malts are skillfully blended to create a medium bodied, crowd-pleasing ale. The nose breathes caramel, malt and complexity. The beer is medium bodied, has the appropriate alcohol of 4.8% and is definitely a beer deserving the title, “session beer”. |

Pale golden amber color. Grilled mango, orange blossom honey, and Hawaiian bread toast aromas follow through on a very supple and round entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium-full body with honey yogurt, apple, and pepper notes. Finishes with a long, warming honey granola fade. Big and tasty; pair with mighty curries. 8.8% ABV |
