Help Restore the Legendary Beer Depot Sign

Show your support on Indiegogo

If you live in Ann Arbor, you may have noticed the conspicuous absence of the historic Beer Depot neon sign near the corner of Main and William streets. You also may be familiar with the story of how it blew down in April 2011, and the Beer Depot’s costly struggle first to get permission to restore the sign, and then to actually pay for the project. Well, as they reached the homestretch, they hit ANOTHER snag, when the insurance company refused to pay on the policy. The Beer Depot took them to court and won, but after legal and administrative expenses, they received considerably less than expected. As a result, they’re reaching out for a little support. Check out their crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, and learn more about the whole sign saga on their blog, where you can also find some photos of the sign, including the one below:

Fall Specials, A New Site, and The Main/Depot Connection

arrivals and subscriber-only deals
at MainDepotConnection.com

Having operated Main Party since 1989, we can lay claim to a few interesting things. Since the demise of the legendary Village Corner, we unquestionably have the largest selection of wine in town, with about 3,000 to choose from. Last we knew, we also have the biggest selection of beer in town, with over 1500, which includes a massive selection of craft brews and imports. And we also have had the longest on-line presence of any local beer and wine sellers; our site first lit up in 1999. That last fact has also unfortunately been a minor impediment; although we were ahead of the curve several years ago, the site has become something like a solid old house with little additions built on the side, with a WordPress blog tacked on (you’re reading it!), and a not-so-well-maintained searchable inventory. That’s all going to change in the next few months though, as we finally blow out the old site and update our technology a bit.

We still don’t have a very active social networking presence; we decided a while back that there’s just too much “noise” in that realm for our busy staff to manage things in a way that actually benefits our guests. But recently, as a stepping stone to launching our new site with lots of other new features, we launched MainDepotConnection.com, where you can sign up to get subscriber only specials and be the first to learn about new arrivals of wine and craft beer, not only here at Main Party, but also at the historic Beer Depot, just a few blocks away. Sometimes one store has specials or new items that the other doesn’t, or if one store sells out of a limited release item, the other may have it. Signing up is a great way to stay ahead of the game.

Our latest wine specials are HERE, and the beer specials are HERE. With October almost upon us and the holiday season just around the corner, this is a great time to plug in and be ahead of the game.

The Best Retail Wine Selection In Ann Arbor?

Best of Ann Arbor
Please vote by November 5, 2011

We hope you vote for us in AnnArbor.com’s weekly contest, which this week is for Best Retail Wine Selection in Ann Arbor. Mostly because facts are facts, and to the best of our knowledge, the only wine retailer in Ann Arbor that ever had a wine selection comparable to ours was the legendary – but sadly no longer with us – Village corner. We take a great deal of pride in managing to present around 3,000 wines in our meager 2500 square feet, while still managing to provide the biggest selection of craft and import beers in the area, as well as over a thousand fine spirits. And everything else you expect in a party store. We’re also realists; we know that a couple of other local retailers have more full-time wine specialists on hand, but go easy on us. We’d love to do the same, but where would we put them? So please, help AnnArbor.com keep the facts straight, and vote for us in this week’s contest. You’ll feel better knowing that truth was served.

Ann Arbor Art Fair 2011

Ann Arbor Art Fair iPhone App

The Ann Arbor Art Fair?
There’s an app for that.

We have plenty of links to useful resources for enjoying the Ann Arbor Art Fairs below, but here’s your first idea for visiting the fairs this year: start and end your day at Main Party! Why? Because we’re in a perfect spot, are open 7am to 2am, and have everything you need to start your day, and everything you need to wrap it up pleasantly. First of all, we’re just blocks from a handy freeway arrival and escape route on US-23. Second, we’re less than 50 feet from a parking structure. After you’ve parked, we have just about anything you need to get your day rolling: coffee, bottled water, juices, a small deli, energy bars and energy drinks, basic sundries, even handy items like aspirin and allergy medicine. When you’re ready to head out, we’re just a couple blocks from the action. And when you’ve had your fun, we’ll be here at the end of the day with the largest selection of fine wine, craft beers, and fine spirits in Ann Arbor, so you can pick up something nice to unwind with when you get home. But enough about us, below are pretty much all the links and resources you’ll need to enjoy the fairs, all in one handy place. First of all, you need to know that the Ann Arbor Art Fair is actually FOUR fairs. We’ll start off with links to each fair’s sites, which all have plenty of other links to useful information. So if you’re leaving us now, we hope you appreciate our little Art Fair Guide, and we’ll look forward to seeing you during the fair!
